The Mastery of Life Part 9
Gripped by Love
“For Christ’s love compels us.” 2 Corinthians 5:14,
The Greek word synechō (συνέχω) means “to hold together,” “to constrain,” or “to compel.” It describes being tightly held or governed by something. In the key verse, Paul writes, “For Christ’s love compels us.” Paul was gripped by the love of Christ—so strongly that it governed his actions, thoughts, and emotions. This love wasn’t something he had to strive to hold onto; instead, it held tightly onto him.
Often, we think self-control begins with our own willpower. But true self-control flows from being held by Christ’s love. When we are compelled by His love, it governs our impulses, desires, and choices. Self-control, then, is not about suppressing ourselves but about surrendering to the constraining force of His love.
Paul’s life demonstrates this beautifully. His motivation and discipline were driven by love. He was so gripped by God’s love that it shaped every aspect of his life. Love and self-control are deeply interconnected; self-control becomes an act of love, and love fuels our ability to live with self control.
Let His love hold you today.
