The Mastery of Life Part 8
Self-Control: Surrendering to God’s Will
"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." — Luke 22:42
Self-control is not about relying on our own willpower or simply suppressing our desires. Jesus provides the ultimate model of what true self-control means: complete surrender to God’s purpose and perfect alignment with His will.
A notable example is when Jesus resisted Satan’s temptations in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11). The devil tempted Him with physical gratification, power, and glory—testing His body, soul, and spirit to lead Him away from God’s purpose. Yet, Jesus demonstrated that self-control is rooted in trust in God’s provision and the Word of God. He shows us that self-control is an act of faith and reliance on God.
The ultimate demonstration of self-control is seen in the Garden of Gethsemane when Jesus prayed, “Not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42). Despite the agony of the cross, He actively surrendered to the Father’s will, driven by love—love for His Father and love for us.
Self-control is not a burden but a loving and powerful choice. It is choosing God’s will over our own will. True self-control flows from an obedient heart aligned with God, empowered by His Spirit, and rooted in love.
Tips: "The 1-Minute Pause" When faced with temptation, pause for 1 minute to pray and seek God’s will. This simple pause invites God into your life and strengthens your self-control.
Prayer:
Abba Father, thank You for the perfect example of self-control through Jesus Christ. Help me to surrender my desires and align my heart with Your will, just as Jesus did. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
