The Mastery of Life Part 2
Why Self-Control Helps Us Build Our True Self
"Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control." – Proverbs 25:28
Many believe that “being true to yourself” or “doing what feels good” defines freedom, or that “spontaneity is better than discipline.” But the truth is, self-control is not about suppressing who you are, but self-control is the path that helps us become our true selves—the people God meant us to be.
Without self-control, our lives are like a city with broken walls, vulnerable to impulses, temptations, and harmful habits. With self-control, we build protection, strength, and purpose. Within this safe and steady environment, self-control shapes our character, forming the foundation of integrity and helping us uncover our true identity—the one God originally intended for us.
True freedom isn’t doing whatever we want; it’s living in alignment with God’s will. His will is for us to be like Jesus, bearing spiritual fruit and growing in virtue. Like learning an instrument or a new language, character-building requires structure, discipline, and practice. Over time, self-control strengthens the "muscles" of virtue, making goodness and integrity second nature.
Self-control is the path to true authenticity, conforming us to Christ’s image and allowing us to bear spiritual fruit. It’s not about restriction but about building a life that reflects Christ’s heart—steadfast, resilient, and truthful. This is true freedom: becoming who God created us to be, living a life of purpose and integrity under His guidance.
Reflection: What areas of your life need more self-control—perhaps your temper, daily habits, or thought life? How can you rely on God’s strength to grow in these areas?
Prayer:Abba father,. Help me to see self-control not as a restriction but as a path to freedom, shaping me into the person You created me to be. Like a city with strong walls, help me to guard my life with self-control, discipline, and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen
