Mercy Triumphs Over Judgment, Part 9: Mercy as a Commandment

"…and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors." – Matthew 6:12 (ESV)

Story

A servant owed his king an unpayable debt of 10,000 talents Out of compassion, the king forgave the entire debt, releasing the servant from financial ruin. But instead of extending the same mercy, the servant found a fellow servant who owed him a mere 100 denarii and demanded immediate repayment. When the fellow servant begged for patience, he refused and had him thrown into prison. Witnesses saw this and reported it to the king, who called the unforgiving servant back. Angrily, the king rescinded his forgiveness, handing him over to the jailers, saying, “Should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?”

When withholding mercy

Mercy has many positive sides, as we’ve explored in previous devotionals, but today we see the danger of withholding it. The parable reminds us that failing to extend mercy leads to negative consequences:

  1. Strained Relationship with God: Like the king rescinding his forgiveness, refusing to forgive others disrupts the principle of grace. God’s forgiveness to us is tied to our willingness to forgive others (Matthew 6:14–15).

  2. Imprisonment of the Heart: The jail represents the spiritual bondage of resentment. Unforgiveness traps us in bitterness and opens the door to the enemy’s oppression.

  3. Broken Relationships: The unforgiving servant’s harshness damaged his relationship with the fellow servant. A lack of mercy affects not only our relationship with God but also others.

  4. Loss of Witness: The witnesses who reported to the king symbolize how others observe how we handle relationships. Our lack of mercy can harm our testimony.

  5. Eternal Consequences: Mercy reflects God’s transformative grace. If we consistently refuse to forgive, it may reveal that we haven’t fully grasped the gospel and the authenticity of our faith..

When we fixate on others’ wrongs while forgetting how God has forgiven us of 10,000 talents, we step outside of alignment with His nature and lose the freedom mercy brings.

To Love Mercy: :

Write a list of people who have wronged us. Pray over each name and choose to forgive them, just as your Heavenly Father has forgiven us.

Prayer:

Abba Father, thank You for forgiving me of my unpayable debt of sin. Help me to remember Your mercy and extend it to others. Teach me to forgive freely, as You have forgiven me, Free me from the prison of unforgiveness and let my life be a testimony of Your mercy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
