A Wise Fool – Part 7: Babbling Fool vs. Wise of Heart
The wise of heart will receive commandments, but a babbling fool will come to ruin. Proverbs 10:8
In Proverbs 10:8 and Proverbs 10:10, we encounter a contrast between the "babbling fool") and the “wise of heart.” The fool refuses to listen and engages in reckless speech, leading to their downfall. In contrast, the wise of heart humbly receive instruction, showing wisdom in both speech and action.
The Fool
The Hebrew word for “babbling” comes from lashon, which refers to speech, talking, or excessive chatter. It implies constant talking without substance—empty words that are often reckless. A babbling fool talks so much that they fail to listen. They are “wise in their own eyes” (Proverbs 12:15), confident in their own opinions, and unwilling to accept correction. The consequence of this behavior is clear: they will fall. This could mean literal conflict with others or stumbling into negative consequences due to their careless words.
The Wise
In contrast, the wise of heart receive commandments. This begins with humility—a willingness to accept advice, instruction, or correction, whether from God or others. The essence of wisdom is being teachable, marked by a heart that listens and is open to change. As Proverbs often reminds us, those who listen tend to speak less, and when they do speak, it is with careful thought and discernment. Wisdom is tied to humility and restraint in speech, choosing words that build up rather than tear down.
Practical Takeaway
be quick to listen and slow to speak. Practice listening more attentively to others. Before responding, pause and consider your words. Are they true? Are they necessary? Are they helpful?
